Honours even against Pymmes in exciting draw
as another season ends
The final
game of the season produced an exciting draw against old rivals
Pymmes. Visitors to the site will be aware of injury/unavailabliity
problems in recent weeks so the resources were stretched for the
final game of the season. Barry Cosgrove threw his hat in the
ring, reminding me of an opening stand of 80 (his contribution
20) in an inter office game for IT versus Office Supplies earlier
in the summer. I made the assessment that regular evening sessions
of online poker were no substitute for time in the middle and
that he was undercooked for the final challenge.
From
last week's team V, Golds and PF came in for Faisal, Cedric and
Clive. On a miserable day Pymmes won the toss and decided to bat
on a very slow Southover wicket. Despite accurate bowling from the
Cat and DJ Alan Russell we didn't threaten a wicket. Pymmes pushed
the self destruct button with two of the Kansara brothers suffering
early run outs to Bagmaster Cotsen and myself. The dangerous' Trinidad
Frank' Leith was bowled by Russell who also accounted for Maisura
well caught by Jani.
At
36-5 Pymmes were struggling but they turned things around with an
excellent stand of 90 between Simon Chambers and Sid Doshi. Chambers
started, as usual, very slowly and was dropped by Golding off Russell
without scoring. Herlihy and Ferdenzi initially kept things tight
until Chambers went after Herlihy and Sid, scoring off Ferdenzi.
The
partnership was finally broken by Golding with a double bouncer
caught by the bagmaster rather untidily. Kansara and Sid (62 n.o)
took Pymmes to 176(which according to the scorebook should have
been 170) for 7.Russell was the pick off the bowlers with 2 for
14 off 10 overs. Cat picked up the other wicket.
Pat
our tea lady was presented with a gift for her fantastic teas-this
week we had scones with strawberries. We were left to chase 177
in less than 2 hours. Tony with some good hitting and an out of
sorts V got us to 22 before V was bowled by Kansara for 5. No doubt
thinking of future life on the Wirrall and evening games for Mark
Billing's office team he played an ugly shot.
Sean
Stroud last week's batting hero joined Tony and took the score to
37 before Tony received a lifter from Simon Chambers and gloved
it to the keeper for 25. Sean was bowled by Chambers for 3 and we
were 55 for 3
Jani
continued his aggressive play from last week and, with an in-form
Mick McGowan, took the score to 72 before he played a loose shot
and was out for a career-best 22. The love-struck teacher has finished
the season a high note and can look forward to lazy Sunday afternoons
with his 'partner'. Mick and Golds started the run chase which was
in excess of seven an over in the last 16-Mick hitting some glorious
shots before he was caught behind for 47.
The
bagmaster joined Golds and after one glorious cover drive was out
for 7 and we were 130 for 6. Golds and I kept the score ticking
over before Trinidad Frank bowled Golds for 15 when he tried to
slog a straight one. ignoring strict instructions from myself not
to hit out and get out It was getting exciting 30 needed off five
overs but when PF was out c and b by Frank winning was out of sight.
Alan Russell went for glory but was caught at mid-on. Cat and I
had to shut up shop and saw off the last 9 balls to finish on 154
for 9 having faced 7 fewer overs than Pymmes.
Nevertheless
it was a good match that ebbed and flowed. A team picture was taken
in the gloom and the bag master packed the bag for the final time
in 2005. The showers were cold for the second week running a matter
that will be taken up with Club Manager Rowan. Both sides returned
to the bar for final reflections on another season over.
Meanwhile
back in our sponsor's bar Stuart' silver spoon' Morris was organising
schedules for the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies and giving various
quotes to interested parties. Watch this space for updates - this
occasional ex-player has a habit of not delivering the goods!
As
the beer flowed V was aiming not to repeat his antics of two weeks
ago when his couple of beers after the Calthorpe match ended with
him waking up on Golds sofa at 6.30 am in the morning while his
wife and daughter were less than 100 yards away in the family home.
Things were looking ominous at 9.45 pm on my departure from Winter's
Public House as he was feeding the cd machine to hear more Country
classics.
It looks like a cricketing product of Ronaldsway is already spending
the equity arising from his move up north Golds had nothing to report
back on his trip to the Oval last Sunday with Quizmaster Henderson-
the arrangement was cancelled-his ticket was sold. We know no more.
My
review of the season will of course reflect on events both on and
off the field. Watch this space.
